What is assertive influence?

Assertive Influence

Assertive influence is the ability to convince, to win support and to mobilise around one's ideas, expressing them clearly and respecting other people's positions.

It differs from three neighbouring postures by what it produces over time: aggressiveness obtains immediate agreement but degrades future cooperation; passivity preserves the relationship but lets bad decisions through; manipulation obtains adherence without the other person knowing what they are consenting to. Concretely, it is the person who gets their proposal adopted in committee without imposing it, by bringing others to rally to it rather than forcing it through.

Like all Core Skills, it is not a personality trait but a trainable cognitive ability, which rests on identifiable mechanisms and expresses itself in observable professional behaviours.

Where this skill plays out concretely:

What kinds of tasks: negotiation, defending a project in committee, arbitration between departments, change management.

In which contexts: matrix organisation, cross-functional project, dependence on a partner (when hierarchical authority is not enough).

At what level of mastery: getting one's position adopted in the face of a hierarchical objection, without breaking the relationship.

Assertive influence belongs to the Leadership & Collaboration family of our framework of 18 soft skills (Rising Up Core Skills).

Why develop assertive influence?

In an environment where leadership relies on influence rather than authority, assertive influence is a measurable driver of performance:

Pour qui?

Pour qui et dans quels contextes ?

This soft skill is embedded in our development paths and certifying assessments at Rising Up.

Company

In matrix organisations where hierarchical authority is no longer enough, technical expertise does not guarantee that the talent will get buy-in without imposing. The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan objectively measures the assertive influence of your talents to identify profiles capable of convincing without crushing. The result: faster decisions, lasting team buy-in and fewer poorly managed conflicts. This competency is particularly important for managers, negotiators, sales directors, HR directors and consultants.

Recruiter

CV and interview no longer suffice to distinguish real assertive influence from a learnt posture. The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan measures assertive influence before the interview through several contextualised evaluation methods, and gives you actionable behavioural data. You gain an objective behavioural signal to limit the risk of a bad hire on managerial and commercial roles. This competency is particularly important for managers, negotiators, sales directors, HR directors and consultants.

Higher education institution

Employers in management, sales and HR fields expect graduates to be able to influence without crushing, an ability rarely measured objectively in traditional curricula. The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan measures this competency, develops your students through the Soft Skills Enrichment programme, then certifies their level at the end of the curriculum. You strengthen graduate employability. This competency is particularly important for managers, negotiators, sales directors, HR directors and consultants.

Assertive Influence

Comment la mesurer et la développer ?

Through the Rising Up Soft Skills Scan, assertive influence is measured scientifically on a 0-100 scale, using different evaluation methods, from situational exercises to contextualized questionnaires, calibrated by our scientific team, led by Dr Nawal Abboub (PhD in cognitive science, lecturer at ENS-PSL, co-founder of Rising Up), in collaboration with researchers from the CNRS, ENS-PSL and Université Paris Cité.

Every report includes:

  • a detailed score and its positioning against the requirements of the role
  • a contextualized behavioural analysis for each professional situation
  • personalized recommendations to progress over time

Rising Up is recognised as Deeptech by the European Innovation Council (EIC) since 2023.

Then, the modules of the Soft Skills Enrichment programme allow you to improve this skill through negotiation challenges, realistic simulations and reflections guided by our proprietary CoreSkills AI.

FAQ

Understanding and developing assertive influence

What is the difference between assertive influence and aggression?

Aggression imposes one's view while crushing the other's: it produces a surface agreement that hides a real disagreement, generating conflicts or demotivation over time. Assertive influence is different: it defends its position while acknowledging the other's and seeking a solid decision.

An assertive person convinces and preserves the relationship. An aggressive one gets immediate agreement but damages future cooperation. Rising Up measures assertive influence, not aggression.

Is assertive influence a competency or a personality trait?

Rising Up measures the competency. There is a temperament base (some are naturally firmer), but effective assertive influence in professional context is a set of trainable behaviours: formulating disagreement, managing perceived disagreement, negotiating a solid compromise.

Our Soft Skills Enrichment programme offers exercises to develop assertive influence at any age.

Can assertive influence be measured objectively?

Calling yourself assertive is very easy; being so before a hostile superior is harder.

The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan evaluates assertive influence by combining situational exercises and contextualized questionnaires where the candidate must defend a position against objection, disagreement or hierarchical pressure. It is the in-context response that is scored, never an abstract self-assessment.

Why is this competency crucial in leadership?

Behavioural skills predict professional success, contribute to it causally, and can be developed (research by James Heckman, Nobel laureate in economics). In modern leadership, assertive influence is at the heart of management without formal authority, negotiation and cross-functional cooperation.

Without assertive influence, a manager can be expert but unheard, or dominant but poorly followed. This competency conditions the ability to shape collective decisions and drive cross-functional projects.
