Effectiveness, the soft skill that delivers useful with the means at hand

Turning effort into usable output is a measurable competency, to be distinguished from efficiency and mere productivity.

What is effectiveness at work?

Effectiveness

Effectiveness is the ability to achieve high results while optimising the resources, time and energy invested.

It differs from efficiency, which measures a yield, and from productivity, which measures a volume: a deliverable can be produced quickly and remain unusable. What matters is that it serves. Concretely, it is the person who delivers on time an imperfect but usable version, rather than a perfect version a week after the decision.

Like all Core Skills, it is not a personality trait but a trainable cognitive ability, which rests on identifiable mechanisms and expresses itself in observable professional behaviours.

Where this skill plays out concretely:

What kinds of tasks: delivery under constraint, short consulting engagement, managing a dense workload, arbitration across files.

In which contexts: small team, constrained budget, imposed deadline (when aiming for perfection amounts to delivering nothing).

At what level of mastery: identifying the minimum useful deliverable, achieving it on time, then iterating.

Effectiveness belongs to the Operational Effectiveness family of our framework of 18 soft skills (Rising Up Core Skills).

Why develop effectiveness?

In a professional environment where time and resources are constrained, effectiveness is a measurable driver of performance:

Pour qui?

Pour qui et dans quels contextes ?

This soft skill is embedded in our development paths and certifying assessments at Rising Up.

Company

In roles where time and resources are constrained, motivation alone does not guarantee that the talent will deliver useful under dense workload. The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan objectively measures effectiveness in your talents to identify profiles capable of prioritising, iterating and delivering without overloading. The result: more value delivered at constant effort, less collective stress and stronger reliability of commitments. This competency is particularly important for managers, consultants, project managers, sales professionals and entrepreneurs.

Recruiter

CV and interview no longer suffice to distinguish a true deliverer from one who has learnt to talk about effectiveness without practising it. The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan measures effectiveness before the interview through several contextualised evaluation methods, and gives you actionable behavioural data. You gain an objective behavioural signal to limit the risk of a bad hire on operational roles. This competency is particularly important for managers, consultants, project managers, sales professionals and entrepreneurs.

Higher education institution

Employers in management, consulting and entrepreneurship fields expect graduates to deliver useful with the means at hand, an ability rarely measured objectively in traditional curricula. The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan measures this competency, develops your students through the Soft Skills Enrichment programme, then certifies their level at the end of the curriculum. You strengthen graduate employability. This competency is particularly important for managers, consultants, project managers, sales professionals and entrepreneurs.

Effectiveness

Comment la mesurer et la développer ?

Through the Rising Up Soft Skills Scan, effectiveness is measured scientifically on a 0-100 scale, using different evaluation methods, from situational exercises to contextualized questionnaires, calibrated by our scientific team, led by Dr Nawal Abboub (PhD in cognitive science, lecturer at ENS-PSL, co-founder of Rising Up), in collaboration with researchers from the CNRS, ENS-PSL and Université Paris Cité.

Every report includes:

  • a detailed score and its positioning against the requirements of the role
  • a contextualized behavioural analysis for each professional situation
  • personalized recommendations to progress over time

Rising Up is recognised as Deeptech by the European Innovation Council (EIC) since 2023.

Then, the modules of the Soft Skills Enrichment programme allow you to improve this skill through constrained-delivery challenges, realistic simulations and reflections guided by our proprietary CoreSkills AI.

FAQ

Understanding and developing effectiveness

What is the difference between effectiveness and efficiency?

Efficiency is a yield: how much output for a given input (time, money, energy). Effectiveness is different: the ability to produce a usable result, regardless of the ratio.

An effective deliverable may have required a lot of effort but truly serves. An efficient deliverable may be produced fast but remain useless. Rising Up measures delivered effectiveness, not raw efficiency.

Can effectiveness be developed as an adult?

Yes. Cognitive science research shows that effectiveness is a trainable competency at any age through practising prioritisation, short iteration and acceptance of the minimum viable.

Our Soft Skills Enrichment programme offers exercises to develop effectiveness, with AI-based progress tracking through CoreSkills AI.

Can effectiveness be measured objectively in professional situations?

Declaring yourself effective is easy; being so in a constrained situation is harder.

The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan evaluates effectiveness by combining situational exercises and contextualized questionnaires where the candidate must prioritise, deliver and iterate with limited resources. It is the in-context response that is scored, never an abstract self-assessment.

Why is this competency crucial in 2026?

Behavioural skills predict professional success, contribute to it causally, and can be developed (research by James Heckman, Nobel laureate in economics). In a world where workload grows and resources shrink, effectiveness is a decisive factor of sustaining performance.

Without measured effectiveness, a company exposes its key roles to employees who burn out, over-invest or produce unusable results. It is a central criterion for hiring and mobility toward dense-workload roles.
