Responsiveness, the soft skill that acts fast without rushing

Intervening quickly in the face of the unexpected is a measurable competency (neither panic nor excessive slowness) that distinguishes reliable talents under pressure.

What is responsiveness at work?

Responsiveness

Responsiveness is the ability to react quickly to the unexpected, to reprioritise and to adapt one's action to new situations.

It differs from precipitation, which acts without having assessed, and from excessive slowness, which understands well but too late: the responsive person intervenes quickly because they have first understood, not in the place of understanding. Concretely, it is the person who, facing a customer incident, first handles what is irreversible and defers the rest.

Like all Core Skills, it is not a personality trait but a trainable cognitive ability, which rests on identifiable mechanisms and expresses itself in observable professional behaviours.

Where this skill plays out concretely:
réactivité — dimension-1----icone

What kinds of tasks: customer service, incident management, crisis communication, responding to a sudden opportunity.

réactivité — dimension-2----icone

In which contexts: public complaint, outage, short commercial window (when response time is part of the outcome).

réactivité — dimension-3----icone

At what level of mastery: assessing an unprecedented situation, prioritising and acting without waiting for instructions.

Responsiveness belongs to the Operational Effectiveness family of our framework of 18 soft skills (Rising Up Core Skills).

Why develop responsiveness?

In an environment where crises and opportunities arrive without warning, responsiveness is a measurable driver of performance:

Pour qui?

Pour qui et dans quels contextes ?

This soft skill is embedded in our development paths and certifying assessments at Rising Up.

Company

In roles where a crisis or opportunity can arrive without warning, technical expertise does not guarantee that the talent will react effectively. The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan objectively measures responsiveness in your talents to identify profiles capable of intervening fast without rushing. The result: better incident management, opportunities better seized and reinforced stakeholder trust. This competency is particularly important for customer service leads, crisis communication officers, operations managers, project managers and sales professionals.

Recruiter

CV and interview no longer suffice to distinguish a truly responsive talent from one who has learnt to look the part. The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan measures responsiveness before the interview through several contextualised evaluation methods, and gives you actionable behavioural data. You gain an objective behavioural signal to limit the risk of a bad hire on high-pressure roles. This competency is particularly important for customer service leads, crisis communication officers, operations managers, project managers and sales professionals.

Higher education institution

Employers in operations, communication and sales fields expect graduates to intervene fast and relevantly under pressure, an ability rarely measured objectively in traditional curricula. The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan measures this competency, develops your students through the Soft Skills Enrichment programme, then certifies their level at the end of the curriculum. You strengthen graduate employability. This competency is particularly important for customer service leads, crisis communication officers, operations managers, project managers and sales professionals.

Responsiveness

Comment la mesurer et la développer ?

Through the Rising Up Soft Skills Scan, responsiveness is measured scientifically on a 0-100 scale, using different evaluation methods, from situational exercises to contextualized questionnaires, calibrated by our scientific team, led by Dr Nawal Abboub (PhD in cognitive science, lecturer at ENS-PSL, co-founder of Rising Up), in collaboration with researchers from the CNRS, ENS-PSL and Université Paris Cité.

Every report includes:

  • a detailed score and its positioning against the requirements of the role
  • a contextualized behavioural analysis for each professional situation
  • personalized recommendations to progress over time

Rising Up is recognised as Deeptech by the European Innovation Council (EIC) since 2023.

Then, the modules of the Soft Skills Enrichment programme allow you to improve this skill through urgency challenges, realistic simulations and reflections guided by our proprietary CoreSkills AI.

FAQ

Understanding and developing responsiveness

What is the difference between responsiveness and rushing?

Rushing means acting fast without evaluating the situation or prioritising: it is an impulsive reaction that often produces more damage than solutions. Responsiveness is different: it is a relevant speed of intervention, based on rapid evaluation and clear-headed prioritisation.

A responsive person acts fast because they have first understood. A rushing person acts fast because they did not take the time to understand. Rising Up measures relevant responsiveness, not rushing.

Can responsiveness be developed as an adult?

Yes. Cognitive science research shows that responsiveness is a trainable competency at any age through controlled exposure to urgent situations, practising rapid prioritisation and managing emotions under pressure.

Our Soft Skills Enrichment programme offers exercises to develop responsiveness, with AI-based progress tracking through CoreSkills AI.

Can responsiveness be measured objectively in professional situations?

Declaring yourself responsive is easy; being so in an urgent situation is harder.

The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan evaluates responsiveness in professional situations through contextualized urgency scenarios where the candidate must evaluate, prioritise and intervene. It is the in-context response that is scored, never an abstract self-assessment.

Why is this competency crucial in 2026?

Behavioural skills predict professional success, contribute to it causally, and can be developed (research by James Heckman, Nobel laureate in economics). Work environments are more volatile than ever: cyberattacks, supply-chain disruptions, social media buzz, client emergencies can turn a role into crisis management within minutes.

Without measured responsiveness, a company exposes its critical roles to employees who will freeze or rush at the most important moment. It is a central criterion for hiring and mobility to exposed roles.
