Reasoning under uncertainty, the soft skill that decides when nothing is certain

Formulating a coherent decision without full information is a measurable competency, at the heart of modern leadership.

What is reasoning under uncertainty?

Reasoning under uncertainty is the ability to analyse and act effectively in ambiguous, changing or contradictory situations, taking suitable decisions despite a lack of information.

It differs from precipitation, which decides without having sought to understand, and from analytical paralysis, which seeks until the window for action has passed. It also differs from intuition: a decision-maker under uncertainty can explain why they decide as they do despite the unknown. Concretely, it is the person who takes a reversible decision immediately rather than a perfect decision too late.

Like all Core Skills, it is not a personality trait but a trainable cognitive ability, which rests on identifiable mechanisms and expresses itself in observable professional behaviours.

Where this skill plays out concretely:

What kinds of tasks: strategic decision, crisis management, product launch, investment arbitration, negotiation with incomplete data.

In which contexts: it becomes decisive when waiting costs more than being wrong, short commercial window, ongoing crisis, moving market.

At what level of mastery: for example, weighing scenarios, deciding, and adjusting as information arrives.

Reasoning under uncertainty belongs to the Innovation & Communication family of our framework of 18 soft skills (Rising Up Core Skills).

Why develop reasoning under uncertainty?

In a volatile professional environment, reasoning under uncertainty is a measurable driver of performance:

Pour qui?

Pour qui et dans quels contextes ?

This soft skill is embedded in our development paths and certifying assessments at Rising Up.

Company

In moments of transformation, crisis or entering a new market, past expertise does not guarantee that the talent will decide facing the unknown. The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan objectively measures reasoning under uncertainty in your talents to identify profiles capable of deciding, experimenting and adjusting. The result: faster decisions, opportunities better seized and stronger organisational resilience. This competency is particularly important for executives, entrepreneurs, strategy directors, consultants and crisis managers.

Recruiter

CV and interview no longer suffice to distinguish a real decision-maker under uncertainty from a talent who has excelled in a stable environment. The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan measures this competency before the interview through several contextualised evaluation methods, and gives you actionable behavioural data. You gain an objective behavioural signal to limit the risk of a bad hire on change-exposed roles. This competency is particularly important for executives, entrepreneurs, strategy directors, consultants and crisis managers.

Higher education institution

Employers in executive, entrepreneurial and strategic fields expect graduates to be able to decide under uncertainty, an ability rarely measured objectively in traditional curricula. The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan measures this competency, develops your students through the Soft Skills Enrichment programme, then certifies their level at the end of the curriculum. You strengthen graduate employability. This competency is particularly important for executives, entrepreneurs, strategy directors, consultants and crisis managers.

Reasoning under Uncertainty

Comment la mesurer et la développer ?

Through the Rising Up Soft Skills Scan, reasoning under uncertainty is measured scientifically on a 0-100 scale, using different evaluation methods, from situational exercises to contextualized questionnaires, calibrated by our scientific team, led by Dr Nawal Abboub (PhD in cognitive science, lecturer at ENS-PSL, co-founder of Rising Up), in collaboration with researchers from the CNRS, ENS-PSL and Université Paris Cité.

Every report includes:

  • a detailed score and its positioning against the requirements of the role
  • a contextualized behavioural analysis for each professional situation
  • personalized recommendations to progress over time

Rising Up is recognised as Deeptech by the European Commission since 2023.

Then, the modules of the Soft Skills Enrichment programme allow you to improve this skill through decision challenges, realistic simulations and reflections guided by our proprietary CoreSkills AI.

Develop reasoning under uncertainty
With AI, our managers increasingly have to decide quickly under uncertainty. Measuring this competency helps us support them in better understanding their own way of deciding and developing it, rather than leaving it to chance.

FAQ

Understanding and developing reasoning under uncertainty

What is the difference between reasoning under uncertainty and intuition?

Intuition is a fast decision without conscious articulation of the reasoning: it can be excellent or catastrophic, without the person knowing why. Reasoning under uncertainty is different: it is an argued decision that explicitly weighs possible scenarios and assumes information incompleteness.

A decision-maker under uncertainty can explain why they decide this way despite the unknown. An intuitive one decides without being able to justify. Rising Up measures argued decision in ambiguous context.

Can this ability be developed as an adult?

Yes. Cognitive science and decision theory research show that reasoning under uncertainty is a trainable competency at any age through controlled exposure to information-limited decisions and practising scenario-based weighting.

Our Soft Skills Enrichment programme offers exercises to develop this competency, with AI-based progress tracking through CoreSkills AI.

How to measure reasoning under uncertainty objectively?

Calling yourself comfortable with uncertainty is easy; being so before a real committing decision is harder. What matters is measuring behaviour in context, not an abstract declaration.

The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan evaluates this competency by combining situational exercises and contextualized questionnaires, where the candidate must decide with incomplete or contradictory information. It is the in-context response that is scored, never an abstract self-assessment.

Why is this competency crucial in 2026?

Behavioural skills predict professional success, contribute to it causally, and can be developed (research by James Heckman, Nobel laureate in economics). Work environments are transforming rapidly: technological transitions (AI), unstable geopolitics, short economic cycles. Executive and strategy roles now require deciding fast and well with incomplete data.

Without reasoning under uncertainty, an executive can have excellent past expertise but stay paralysed in the face of a new context. It is a central hiring criterion for executive roles.
