Synthetic Reasoning

What is synthetic reasoning?

Synthetic reasoning is the ability to select, organise and restitute the essential information from multiple sources to inform a decision or a problem.

It differs from mechanical summary, which reduces without hierarchising, and from analysis, which decomposes without rebuilding: analysing without synthesising produces knowledge but no decision. Concretely, it is the person who, on a hundred-page file, can name the three things that change the arbitration, and takes responsibility for setting the rest aside.

Like all Core Skills, it is not a personality trait but a trainable cognitive ability, which rests on identifiable mechanisms and expresses itself in observable professional behaviours.

Where this skill plays out concretely:

What kinds of tasks: executive summary, board committee, literature or study review, project scoping, results debrief.

In which contexts: it becomes decisive when the decision-maker does not have time to read everything, arbitration under deadline, voluminous file, executive-level counterpart.

At what level of mastery: for example, hierarchising, setting aside the accessory and proposing an actionable reading while owning the choices made.

Synthetic reasoning belongs to the Innovation & Communication family of our framework of 18 soft skills (Rising Up Core Skills).

Why develop synthetic reasoning?

In an information-saturated environment, synthetic reasoning is a measurable driver of performance:

Pour qui?

Pour qui et dans quels contextes ?

This soft skill is embedded in our development paths and certifying assessments at Rising Up.

Company

In executive committees, transformation projects or strategic studies, expertise does not guarantee that the talent will extract the essence from a voluminous file. The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan objectively measures synthetic reasoning in your talents to identify profiles capable of summarising 100 pages into 5 usable lines. The result: faster decisions, better-aligned teams and reduced decision fatigue. This competency is particularly important for managers, directors, project managers, analysts and consultants.

Recruiter

CV and interview no longer suffice to distinguish real synthesis capacity from a circumstantial oral ease. The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan measures synthetic reasoning before the interview through several contextualised evaluation methods, and gives you actionable behavioural data. You gain an objective behavioural signal to limit the risk of a bad hire on roles requiring clarity and prioritisation. This competency is particularly important for managers, directors, project managers, analysts and consultants.

Higher education institution

Employers in consulting, management and analytical fields expect graduates to be able to synthesise a complex file, an ability rarely measured objectively in traditional curricula. The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan measures this competency, develops your students through the Soft Skills Enrichment programme, then certifies their level at the end of the curriculum. You strengthen graduate employability. This competency is particularly important for managers, directors, project managers, analysts and consultants.

Synthetic Reasoning

Comment la mesurer et la développer ?

Through the Rising Up Soft Skills Scan, synthetic reasoning is measured scientifically on a 0-100 scale, using different evaluation methods, from situational exercises to contextualized questionnaires, calibrated by our scientific team, led by Dr Nawal Abboub (PhD in cognitive science, lecturer at ENS-PSL, co-founder of Rising Up), in collaboration with researchers from the CNRS, ENS-PSL and Université Paris Cité.

Every report includes:

  • a detailed score and its positioning against the requirements of the role
  • a contextualized behavioural analysis for each professional situation
  • personalized recommendations to progress over time

Rising Up is recognised as Deeptech by the European Commission since 2023.

Then, the modules of the Soft Skills Enrichment programme allow you to improve this skill through synthesis challenges, realistic simulations and reflections guided by our proprietary CoreSkills AI.

FAQ

Understanding and developing synthetic reasoning

What is the difference between synthetic and analytical reasoning?

Analytical reasoning decomposes a situation into elements to understand it in detail. Synthetic reasoning is the reverse and complementary operation: it recomposes an actionable representation from the mass of identified elements.

Analysing without synthesising produces knowledge but no decision. Synthesising without prior analysis produces simplicity. Both are necessary: Rising Up specifically measures the final recomposition capacity.

Can synthetic thinking be developed as an adult?

Yes. Cognitive science research shows that synthetic reasoning is a trainable competency at any age through practising information prioritisation, actionable summarising and targeted feedback.

Our Soft Skills Enrichment programme offers exercises to develop synthetic reasoning, with AI-based progress tracking through CoreSkills AI.

Can synthetic reasoning be measured objectively?

Calling yourself synthetic is easy; being so facing a voluminous and contradictory file is harder. What matters is measuring behaviour in context, not an abstract declaration.

The Rising Up Soft Skills Scan evaluates synthetic reasoning by combining situational exercises and contextualized questionnaires, where the candidate must produce a clear and actionable synthesis from a set of information. It is the in-context response that is scored, never an abstract self-assessment.

Why is this competency valued in management?

Behavioural skills predict professional success, contribute to it causally, and can be developed (research by James Heckman, Nobel laureate in economics). In management, synthetic reasoning is a decisive driver of decisional clarity in the face of information overload.

A manager who does not synthesise drowns their teams in details, slows down committees and loses credibility with leadership. It is a central criterion for promotion to strategic roles.
